Charles Dickens Great Expectations Essay - 988 Words

Charles Dickens: Great Expectations Describe how Dickens creates atmosphere and introduces characters in Chapter One of Great Expectations. In this essay I am going to describe how Dickens successfully uses tension and drama to create atmosphere and to introduce his characters status, emotions and identity in the opening chapter of Great Expectations. The central character, Pip, is followed from youth as he makes the journey from poverty to riches and back again as he attempts to fulfil his own great expectations. To do this I will be examining in close detail the techniques he used to sustain the reader’s interest in the first chapter. Dickens also uses repetition in many places to add effect â€Å"He tilted me again† The place where Pip lives is in the middle of nowhere â€Å"ours was the marsh country, within as the river wound, twenty miles of the sea†. There is a sudden burst of tension when an unknown character suddenly appears, â€Å"Hold your noise†. This happens very suddenly and grabs the readers attention. Towards the end of the first chapter Dickens uses a gothic symbol of death to create fear in both the characters and the readers, â€Å"A gibbet with some chains hanging to it†. A gibbet is a piece of equipment used to bring about the end of someone’s life especially that of a pirate. It is also sometimes known as a hangman’s gallows. Pip is the main character who instantly gets the readers interested in his story from the start. The name Pip being a nickname from â€Å"Phillip Pirrip† would state a point that he may be small for his age and may resemble a seed or a Pip, â€Å"undersized for my years†. Pip is an orphan who knows only the names of his parents and where they are buried â€Å"As I never saw my father of my mother†. Any description he has of his parents or his five brothers are â€Å"derived from their tombstones† indicating a childish imagination. A major reason for students to succeed academically in college or drop out is their level of motivation. Students in college have made the decision attend a college, and therefore have already experienced motivation during the application process. Motivation is defined as the driving force which causes us to achieve goals. The company keeps its price low by reducing the services offered to the customers and selling products in its own private brand. In the recent years, the company has given competition to various multinational retailers and forced them to reduce their price and profit margins. IN the UK, the major competitor of Aldi is lidl which is also a discount retailer. Both the companies are beating their competitors on premium products by offering bargain prices. It has stores over 18 countries and the expanding in other countries. The company operates in major parts of Europe, Australia and the USA. There are about 8000 stores of Aldi situated in different parts across the world. Aldi began its operations in the UK in 1990; however, its presence in the country is limited. In the recent years, the market share of the company is constantly growing due to its no frill attached cheap services. Several affluent customers have also started attracting towards cheap and low cost products offered by the company. The growing affluence of the retail chain has dreaded the previous supermarket chains and the companies have adopted strategies to reduce their prices. In Australia, the company initiated operations in 2001. At that time, the retail market of Australia was dominated by the duopoly of Coles and Woolworths who had maximum market share. Other than that, a local discount retaile r named Franklins was also operational. Although the retail market of Australia was a Greenfield operation, several foreign retailers entered the Australian market and failed as they were unable to snatch their market share from the market leaders. However, Aldi has become successful in the Australian markets as it obtained the market share of Franklins after its failure and provided qualitative products to the customers. Marketing Analysis In order to capture market share and attract new customers, the companies adopt robust marketing strategy. The marketing strategy of a company is strongly related to the sales and operations and the public relations of the company. The business organizations strategize their marketing activities to coordinate marketing activities and maximizing the impact of the marketing tactics (Leake, Vaccarello and Ginty, 2012). The most important contributor to the cheap prices offered by the company is the private labels which are the product manufactured by the company. The retailer also sells fewer items than a typical retail store which increases sales volume and drive discount. Moreover, by implementing private labels the company reduces the cost of the middle man (Lutz, 2015). As discussed above, the designing of the store are done in a manner such that the operational costs are optimized. The stores use natural sunlight and utility costs are minimized. The working of the store managers is also optimized by using stock shel ves instead of boxes. In the same essence, the company has implemented several strategies such as easy scanning, check-out system, self-service and use of shopping carts to reduce the costs to the company. Differentiated Strategy: The Company has implemented differentiated strategy to tap customers from different market segments. In this strategy, the company has targeted the low cost customers and the environmentally aware people. It has targeted its marketing strategy to the environmentally conscious people by increasing the number of environmental friendly policies. It promotes its energy efficient drives, and promotes itself as a socially responsible retail marketer. The company introduces itself as an organization which is not operational twenty four hours and thus adopts energy efficient practices. Moreover, it also promoted the sourcing of fresh fruits and vegetables and the environmentally-friendly packaging. It has also participated in several communities that promote the child nutrition, no artificial color and quality testing (Aldi, 2017). It can be inferred from the above discussion that Aldi follows the strategy of cost leadership and the differentiated marketing strategy. Strategic Marketing Options So far, Aldi has been successful in creating a substantial market share for itself in the Australian market. However, the company can increase its market share by adopting several marketing tactics. In the following section, several recommendations are made to develop the marketing plan of Aldi. Use of Online Methods: As the company is focused on reducing its operational costs, it can implement online methods to drive its marketing strategy. The online methods are cheap and viable option to communicate with the young generation through social media. The company should be responsive of the messages and the complaints of the customers. Other than that, the company should also focus on connecting with its customers on the social media. Aldi can also implement email marketing and social page optimization to attract customers (Leake, Vaccarello and Ginty, 2012). It can share the new schemes and the discount offers to the customers though online methods. Offering free newsletter: Aldi can enhance its customer base by offering a free newsletter. The newsletter will contain information regarding the new offers, products offered by the organization and discounts. It will help the company to increase its potential customer base. Free newsletters are accessible to everyone and it increases brand awareness. Along with it, the company can start blog in the online media wherein it can connect with its customers. The company should connect with its customers and ask for their opinion and responses for the services provided. Incorporating the suggestions of the customers will increase the customer satisfaction and the service quality (Gilmore, 2003). Offer excellent Customer Service: Aldi provided minimal customer services to its customers to reduce its operational costs. However, in Australia the company is also targeting the middle-class customers by providing quality products at reasonable rates. These customers are habitual of getting excellent customer services. Building Partnership with the Suppliers: Aldi is a discount retail organization. The company resists selling branded products and relies on its own private label. Investing in the longevity of the Customer Relationship: If the involvement of the customer is high with the company, it is more likely that the customers will stay in the company rather than going to its competitors. Tartuffe Benjamin Koerner TARTUFFE In the neoclassical comedy Tartuffe, written by Jean-Baptiste Polquelin Moliere, Tartuffe is illustrated as a disreputable character who has posed as a religious ascetic. Orgon, the master of the house, is convinced Tartuffe is a humble and pious man despite the rest of his families claims. Yet, in Act IV, scene seven the impostor Tartuffe is finally exposed for the fraud he really is. ACT IV Scene 7 Tartuffe, Elmire, Orgon TARTUFFE [Not seeing ORGON] Madam, all things have worked out to perfection; I've given the neighboring rooms a full inspection; No one's about: and now I may at last... ORGON [Intercepting him] Hold on, my passionate fellow, not so fast! I should advise a little more restraint. Well, so you thought you'd fool me, my dear saint! How soon you wearied of the saintly life- Wedding my daughter, and coveting my wife! I've long suspected you, and had a feeling That soon I'd catch you at your double dealing. Just now, you've given me evidence galore; It's quite enough; I have no wish for more. ELMIRE [to TARTUFFE] I'm sorry to have treated you so slyly, but circumstances forced me to be wily. TARTUFFE Brother, you can't think... ORGON No more talk from you; Just leave this household, without more ado. TARTUFFE What I intended... ORGON That seems fairly clear. Spare me your falsehoods and get out of here. TARTUFFE No, I'm the master, and you're the one to go! This house belongs to me, I'll have you know, And I shall show you that you can't hurt me By this contemptible conspiracy, That those who cross me know not what they do, And that I've means to expose and punish you, Avenge offended Heaven, and make you grieve That ever you dared order me to leave. Scene seven of ACT IV represents the climax and drastic turn of events, where Tartuffe is unmasked then once again gains the upperhand as the new master of the house. In previous scenes, Tartuffe had been acquitted by Orgon of being anything short of a Saint. The family had grown tired of Orgon's blindness and Elmire had prepared for the restoration of her husband's sight with a scheme to catch the scoundrel in his lies. Ultimately the outcome remains with Tartuffe in control using the deed and mysterious box as his position of power. In an earlier scene Elmire devises a way to expose the hypocrite to Orgon. She persuades Orgon to conceal himself under a table while she speaks to Tartuffe, and her husband is thus a witness to the impostor's hypocrisy in all of its glory. What follows is a ?contemptible conspiracy? to catch Tartuffe and prove his deception. Elmire trying to satisfy her husbands need for proof sets a trap for the lustful Tartuffe luring him by falsely proclaiming her love for him. Tartuffe at first is tentative and confused by her sudden change of heart, yet Elmire reveals the nature of women and explains her jealousy of his plans to marry Mariane. Nevertheless Tartuffe advances further upon Elmire and even goes as far as to call the eavesdropping Orgon gullible saying that he is a blind fool, and that if Elmire kept their affair a secret, then it wouldn't be a sin. With this Elmire asks Tartuffe to check for spies while Orgon emerges from under the table. With Tartuffe's return Orgon has waited and heard enough proof to confront the impostor. The passage of ACT IV Scene seven is crucial in linking the entire story together. It is the revelation that the audience has been waiting for and sets the mood for the fifth and final act. The new situation that has arisen is a certain cause for alarm. Orgon and his family are troubled by Tartuffe's potential to displace them with the deed and display the incriminating papers within the strong box. In scenes following the passage Orgon, Elmire, and Cleante, the voice of reason, discuss their dilemma which has come about due to Orgon's blindness. Orgon has now seen both sides of his extreme spectrum. He went from loving Tartuffe as a pious and charitable man to now cursing the entire brotherhood. Obviously there is no dealing in moderation for Orgon. In scene 6 Elmire warns Orgon's fury is ?premature? but again he is deaf and blind to his family's words of advice. His haste causes Tartuffe to react defensively and with violent overtones. With a little moderation and words of reason, Orgon may have been able to escape with his home and freedom in tact.
